When Should I Enrol My Child in Childcare?

If you've got a baby on the way, or a little one at home and a return-to-work date looming, childcare is probably already on your mind. Good news: you're asking the right question. The honest answer is that most families wish they'd started looking sooner. This guide covers when to get on a waitlist, how the whole process works, what to look for when you visit a centre, and what to pack for day one.

Earlier than you might think

Here's the thing: if you're pregnant and thinking it might be a bit soon to be worrying about childcare, it's probably not. For a lot of Australian families, getting onto a waitlist while you're still expecting isn't just smart, it's necessary.

There's also solid research behind starting early. The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children found that kids who attended early childhood education and care from the infant and toddler years had stronger cognitive gains than those who only started at preschool age. The earlier little ones get into quality care and learning, the more time they have to build the language, social, and thinking skills that set them up for school and life.

In many parts of Australia, popular centres have waitlists stretching six months to over a year. If you've got a return-to-work date in mind, at six months, twelve months, or somewhere in between, start working backwards from there.

A handy guide: if you're pregnant, start reaching out to centres around the 20 week mark. That gives you enough runway to visit, ask questions, and get your name down without the last-minute scramble.

How do childcare waitlists work?

Every centre runs its waitlist a little differently. Some go strictly first-come, first-served. Others give priority to siblings of kids already enrolled, or to local families. Most will want your child's name, date of birth or due date, which days you need, and a rough start date.

At Aussie Kindies, you'll need to complete a centre tour before progressing on the waitlist. You can call our family support team on 1800 244 532 to book one in, or find your nearest Aussie Kindies centre and get in touch directly.

A few things worth knowing:

Being on multiple waitlists at once is totally fine. You're not locking yourself in anywhere until you've formally accepted a place and signed an enrolment agreement.

Timelines can be unpredictable. A spot might come up in a few weeks, or it might take a while longer. Being flexible about which days you need and when you can start will help.

If things change, you've found somewhere else, your plans have shifted, or life's just gone a different direction, give the centre a heads up. It's the right thing to do, and it keeps the relationship in good shape if you ever want to come back.

What to look for when you visit a centre

A tour is more than a look around - it's your chance to get a real feel for whether a centre is the right fit for your family. Trust your gut, and come with questions.

Our childcare centre checklist is a great place to start. When you're there, here's what to pay attention to:

How are educators engaging with the kids? Are they warm, present, and down at the children's level? That connection between educators and children makes all the difference day to day.

Does the place feel relaxed and well set up? A good early learning environment is inviting and purposeful, not chaotic, not clinical.

Ask about the curriculum. At Aussie Kindies, our Lifelong Learning Curriculum shapes how rooms are set up and how educators plan for each child's individual development, all in line with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF).

Ask what a typical day looks like. Knowing the rhythm of the day, for a baby, a toddler, or a kindy kid, can make the whole thing feel a lot less daunting.

Ask how they keep parents in the loop. Good communication from the get-go makes the settling-in period a whole lot easier.

Understanding childcare costs before you commit

We get it, childcare costs can feel like a lot to get your head around. But most families pay significantly less than the sticker price, thanks to the Child Care Subsidy (CCS). How much you get back depends on your household income, how many days your child attends, and the type of care.

Our guide to how much childcare costs breaks it all down in plain English, including how to check what you're entitled to and what to expect on your bill.

It's also worth thinking about which program suits your child's age and stage. We've got early learning options for babies and young toddlers right through to kindy, and the right fit will depend on your child, your work schedule, and the days you need.

What to bring on your child's first day

Your centre team will give you the full rundown once you're enrolled. But as a general guide, you'll usually need:

  • A change of clothes (extra for babies and toddlers)
  • A named drink bottle
  • A wide-brimmed hat
  • Any comfort items your child loves - a favourite toy, a dummy, a special blanket

Your centre will flag anything extra specific to their rooms or programs.

Give yourself time to settle in too

The first few weeks can bring up all sorts of feelings, for your little one and for you. Some kids take to it straight away; others need a bit more time to find their feet. Both are completely normal, and our educators have seen it all.

At Aussie Kindies, we work closely with families through the settling-in period, keep you updated on how your child is going, and always want to hear from you if something doesn't feel right.

Starting with shorter sessions and building up gradually is something we encourage - it makes a real difference for a lot of families.
