Have you ever heard your little one ask, “Why is the sky blue?” or “How do birds fly?” That’s science, and it starts a lot earlier than you might think.
At Aussie Kindies, we know children are naturally curious. And this Science Week (9-17 August 2025), we’re tapping into that curiosity to celebrate this year’s exciting theme:
Decoding the Universe: Exploring the Unknown with Nature’s Hidden Language
Sounds big, right? But really, it’s about something children aged 0-5 already do every day - noticing patterns, asking questions, making guesses, and figuring things out.
It’s the way toddlers line up toys in colour order, or the way kindy kids notice how flowers bloom after the rain. That’s them making sense of the world, just like a scientist would.
Science in Everyday Moments
At Aussie Kindies, we don’t wait until children are older to introduce STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) learning. We start small, with play.
In the babies and toddler rooms, that might look like:
- Splashing in water and noticing what floats and what sinks
- Feeling the texture of leaves or the smoothness of a rock
- Watching shadows move across the room
For our preschoolers and kindy kids, it becomes:
- Sorting shells by size or colour
- Using a magnifying glass to look closely at nature
- Talking about why the moon is out during the day
These small discoveries help children build confidence and curiosity, one question at a time.
The Aussie Kindies Approach
Our Lifelong Learning Curriculum includes a dedicated Big Thinkers STEM program that makes science fun, hands-on and part of everyday life.
With guidance from our educators, children are encouraged to:
- Explore and observe
- Predict and test their ideas
- Work with friends to find answers
- Ask “why?” and keep asking
And most of all, to feel safe and supported while they learn.
What Science Week Looks Like in Our Centres
Throughout the week, children at Aussie Kindies centres might:
- Go on a nature hunt to find patterns in leaves, bark and feathers
- Sort natural items by texture or colour
- Trace shadows on the playground
- “Rescue” animals frozen in ice using warm water
- Test which items float, and which ones sink
It’s all designed to help children explore patterns, systems and signals, all part of decoding the world around them.

Try It at Home: Easy Science Fun for the Whole Family
You don’t need special equipment to keep the Science Week fun going at home. Here are three simple ideas to try with your child:
1. Shadow Explorers (Ages 2-5)
Head outside with some toys and chalk. Place the toys in the sun and trace their shadows. Come back later - has the shadow moved?
2. Nature’s Colour Sort (All Ages)
Collect leaves, flowers or stones on a walk. Sort them by colour or shape. Talk about what’s the same and what’s different.
3. Sound Match Game (Ages 1-5)
Hide items like keys, a toy car, or a rattle behind a towel. Make one sound at a time and ask: What do you think that was?
These little games help children learn about patterns, cause and effect, and observation, the basics of science, all wrapped up in play.
Why It Matters
Science Week is more than a themed activity, it’s a celebration of the way children learn every day.
When we take time to explore the why behind their play, we show them that their questions are important, and that learning is exciting.
At Aussie Kindies, that’s what we’re all about.
