Whether you’re chasing chickens in the backyard, popping into the local IGA, or walking past the neighbour’s tractor on the way to kindy, your toddler is listening - and learning - with every word you say.
At Aussie Kindies Early Learning, we believe that big learning doesn’t require a classroom or a lesson plan. It happens in the little moments, through simple, loving conversations. And as a parent, you’re already your child’s most important teacher.
Here’s how to support your toddler’s language development through everyday chats - and how we build on that learning at our centres using the research-backed Abecedarian 3a approach.
How We Support Language Learning at Aussie Kindies
As part of our Lifelong Learning Curriculum, Aussie Kindies centres use the Abecedarian 3a language program - a gentle, proven approach that focuses on:
-
Language Priority - making meaningful conversation part of every routine
-
Conversational Reading - encouraging back-and-forth interactions during storytime
-
Learning Games - using play to spark language and build connection
Our educators weave these strategies into daily life - from morning greetings to mealtimes, outdoor play to quiet cuddles. It’s not a separate “lesson” - it’s just how we interact, with warmth and purpose.
Simple Language Boosters You Can Use at Home
These ideas don’t require extra time or prep - they fit right into your existing day.
Talk Through What You’re Doing
Whether you're hanging the washing or collecting eggs, narrate what’s happening:
"Now we’re washing your hands - splash splash! All clean."
Pause and Wait
After you speak, give your toddler a moment. That pause shows you’re listening and gives them a chance to respond in their own time.
Expand on What They Say
If they say “cow,” you could say:
"Yes, it’s a big brown cow! It’s chewing grass and swishing its tail."
Follow Their Curiosity
Whatever they’re pointing to or watching closely - talk about it:
"You see the bin truck? It's lifting the bin - bang! There it goes."
Make Books Interactive
At Aussie Kindies, we use Conversational Reading - a style that invites children to respond, not just listen. You can do it at home too:
"What do you think will happen next?" or "Can you spot the duck?"
What This Looks Like at Aussie Kindies
Whether you're in Blue Haven, Keilor, or Creswick, our toddler rooms are alive with rich language and warm connection.
Our educators kneel to eye level, listen with intent, and respond with care - using the Abecedarian 3a strategies to support communication, connection, and confidence. Because we know children learn best when they feel heard.
