Teaching your child to brush their teeth, wash their hands, or hop into the bath doesn’t have to be a battle. In fact, with a little patience, play, and routine, it can become one of the calmest, happiest parts of your day.
At Aussie Kindies Early Learning, we know good hygiene habits take time to learn - especially for busy families with little ones at different stages. That’s why our educators gently support children aged 0–5 to build everyday skills like handwashing and self-care in fun, age-appropriate ways.
Whether your toddler is just learning to hold a toothbrush or your preschooler is ready to take the lead, we’re here to help at every step.
Because at Aussie Kindies, we see your child as part of our extended family. And like all good families, we support each other through the big, small, messy and magical moments of everyday life
Make Tooth Brushing Fun, Not a Fight
Tooth brushing doesn’t always come naturally to little ones. Some resist the taste, some hate the feel, and others just don’t want to stop playing. But the more fun you can make it, the more success you’ll have.
Try this:
-
Brush together - kids love copying what grown-ups do.
-
Let your child choose a colourful toothbrush and gentle-flavoured toothpaste.
-
Play a song that goes for two minutes - like “Brush Your Teeth” by The Wiggles.
✨ Top tip: Children should start brushing twice a day with help as soon as their first tooth appears. At Aussie Kindies, we talk about oral health through stories, songs and pretend play so kids feel excited to learn.
Get into the Handwashing Habit
Handwashing is one of the easiest ways to protect kids from illness - but remembering to do it (and doing it well) is something that takes time and lots of reminders.
You can make it easier by:
-
Keeping a step stool near the sink so your child can wash independently.
-
Using fun foaming soap or colourful timers.
-
Singing “Happy Birthday” twice while they wash, to make sure it lasts at least 20 seconds.
At our centres, handwashing happens naturally throughout the day - after play, before food, after the toilet - so it quickly becomes second nature.
Turn Bath Time Into a Bonding Moment
For some kids, bath time is the best part of the day. For others, it’s a no-go zone. The trick is to keep it light, playful, and part of a calm, predictable routine.
Try these ideas:
-
Offer toys like stacking cups, rubber ducks or soft sponges.
-
Let your child “wash” a toy first, then themselves.
-
Keep the rhythm steady - bath, story, bed - so it feels familiar and comforting.
Have more than one child?
Bathing siblings together can save time and create sweet shared moments. Older kids often enjoy helping their younger sibling learn new skills - and it reinforces what they already know.
What If Your Child Is...
-
Under 2? Keep it sensory and exploratory - bubbles, gentle songs, lots of copying you.
-
Ages 2–3? Encourage simple choices like picking their towel or soap. Little responsibilities feel big to toddlers!
-
Ages 4–5? Focus on building independence. Try a sticker chart, routine cards, or let them “teach” a favourite toy how to brush or wash.
Every child is different, and what works one day might not work the next - and that’s completely normal.
On the Tough Days...
Between daycare drop-offs, meals, and everything else life throws at you, it’s no wonder that some routines feel like a stretch. But the truth is, your efforts matter - even when things aren’t perfect.
Progress is made in small, everyday moments. When you show up with love and patience (even if there are a few tears along the way), your child is learning more than you think.
And remember - you’re not doing this alone. Our educators are here to help reinforce these habits every day, and they’re always happy to chat if you’d like tips that align with your child’s learning at the centre.
Parent Hacks for Everyday Hygiene:
- Make it playful - songs, stories, or toys in the tub
-
Let your child choose their toothbrush, soap, or towel
-
Keep routines consistent, but flexible
-
Celebrate effort more than perfection
-
Ask your child’s educators for support - they know your child well and are always here to help
