From January 2026, the Australian Government is introducing a new 3 Day Guarantee as part of the Child Care Subsidy (CCS). It means that more families will now be able to access up to three days of subsidised early learning and care per week, even if they don’t meet the activity test.

What Is the 3 Day Guarantee?
Right now, if a family doesn’t meet the activity test (which counts hours of paid work, study, or volunteering), they may only receive 24 hours of subsidised child care per fortnight, which usually works out to one day per week.
But from January 2026, families who meet the new criteria will receive 72 hours of subsidised care per fortnight, or around three days per week.
That’s more time for your child to learn and socialise, and more support for you as a parent.
Who Can Access the 3 Day Guarantee?
You may be eligible if:
- Your family income is under $535,279 per year
- You don’t meet the CCS activity test
- You have a child under school age
- You’re eligible for the Child Care Subsidy

Real-Life Example: Meet Tahlia and Max
Tahlia is a mum living in Victoria with her 3-year-old son, Max. She’s currently studying part-time and doesn’t meet the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) activity test, which requires a minimum number of hours in paid work, study, or volunteering.
Because of this, Max has only been eligible for one subsidised day of care per week. If Tahlia wanted him to attend more days, she would have to pay full fees, something that hasn’t been financially possible.
Starting January 2026, Tahlia will be eligible for the 3 Day Guarantee, giving her 72 hours of subsidised care per fortnight, the equivalent of three days per week.
Here’s what that means:
Before the 3 Day Guarantee
- Weekly cost (1 day): $140
- CCS covers 85% so Tahlia pays $21.00 per week
What Changes in 2026
- Weekly cost (3 days): $140 × 3 = $420
- CCS covers 85% so Tahlia pays $63.00 per week
What It Means for Tahlia
Before, Max attended one day per week, limiting his opportunities to socialise and learn.
After the 3 Day Guarantee takes effect, Max can attend three days a week, giving him more time to build friendships, explore new ideas, and prepare for school. For Tahlia, it means more time to focus on her studies and feel supported.
