Little Bodies, Big Energy: Fun Ways to Keep Your Child Moving Every Day

If your little one seems to be made of pure energy – constantly running, bouncing, climbing or spinning – you’re not imagining it!

At Aussie Kindies Early Learning, we know that movement isn’t just about letting off steam. It’s how young children explore the world, build confidence, and grow strong in both body and mind. That’s why we’ve created a free Movement Moments cheat sheet – a fun printable you can stick on the fridge, packed with easy, no-fuss ideas to keep your child active at home. You’ll find the download further down in this post.

From wobbly first steps to joyful leaps, every movement helps your child learn, connect, and thrive.

Why Movement Matters in the Early Years

Kids are natural movers – and that’s a good thing! Those big, energetic movements (called gross motor skills) help your child build strength, coordination, and brain power.

Here’s why it’s so important:

  • Helps with balance, muscle strength, and coordination
  • Supports brain development, focus, and attention
  • Builds confidence and spatial awareness
  • Prepares kids for important everyday skills – like sitting at a table, drawing, writing, and joining in at group time

From crawling and cruising to climbing and skipping, movement is how kids make sense of their bodies and surroundings.

And while every child is different – some love tumbling and running, while others enjoy dancing or yoga – the key is finding ways to keep them moving that feel fun and natural.

According to the Australian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines, toddlers and preschoolers should be getting around three hours of active play each day – and yes, that includes short bursts throughout the day!

Movement in Action at Aussie Kindies

We don’t expect children to sit still for long at Aussie Kindies – and that’s exactly how it should be! Our educators plan fun, engaging activities that get children moving throughout the day.

You might see:

  • Obstacle courses and climbing adventures in our outdoor areas
  • Grooving to music during movement time
  • Hopping, crawling, and stretching through learning zones
  • Group games and nature play that build coordination and teamwork
  • Children helping set up and pack away (yes, that counts too!)

Our play-based approach, combined with the Lifelong Learning Curriculum, makes sure your child’s physical development is supported in a fun, meaningful way – every single day.

At Home: When Your Child Is All Go (or Doesn’t Want to Move)

Some days your child is bouncing off the walls. Other days, it’s like they’ve turned into a sloth. Either way, it’s completely normal!

Here are a few simple tips to encourage movement:

  • Let the wiggles out – movement helps kids focus and feel better
  • Keep things easy – think backyard play, hallway races, or jumping on the spot
  • Be their role model – kids love copying grown-ups being silly and active
  • Aim for short bursts – 15 minutes here and there adds up
  • Get creative – try a kitchen dance-off or a walk around the block

Movement = School Readiness, Too!

Movement isn’t just about fitness – it actually helps children get ready for school. A strong core helps them sit upright during group time. Good coordination supports writing and drawing. And group movement games build social skills, confidence, and focus.

At Aussie Kindies, we’re big believers in learning through movement – because healthy bodies support healthy minds.
